Outside Scholarships
There are other resources available for students that are not offered at the federal or state level. Below are links to outside entities that are available to search for additional awards and scholarships.
Galveston Golf Cart Society Scholarship for Ball High Students
NISOD invites you to participate in the Scott Wright Student Essay Contest!
Write a 500-word essay describing how a faculty member, staff member, or administrator inspired and supported you to complete a course, finish a semester, or graduate from college, and how their encouragement helped you achieve your goals.
The Prize
Three (3) winning student authors and the featured faculty members or administrators mentioned in their essays will each receive:
- $1,000 USD
- Travel to the International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence (May
24-27 in Austin, Texas), including:
- Up to $400 USD toward travel to Austin, TX
- Up to three (3) nights lodging (Saturday, Sunday, Monday nights only)
- One (1) complimentary conference registration
Additionally, each winning student author's college will receive a complimentary one-year NISOD membership.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Students must be at least 18 years old by May 2025.
- The faculty, staff member, or administrator featured in the essay must currently be employed at the college.
- Both the student and the faculty, staff member, or administrator mentioned in the essay must be able to travel to Austin to participate in the Student Essay Contest presentation during NISOD's annual conference.
Timeline:
- Contest opens: August 19, 2024
- Submission deadline: March 7, 2025
- Winners notified: March 21, 2025
- Winner acceptance due: April 4, 2025
- Prize presented and essays read at the NISOD conference: May 25, 2025

NISOD invites you to participate in the Student Graphic Design Contest!
Design the official Conference Program front cover for NISOD's 2026 International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, the definitive gathering of community and technical college faculty, administrators, and staff seeking best and promising practices designed to improve student achievement.
The Prize
The winning student artist will receive:

Suggested Theme and Style Guidelines:
We are looking for artwork that is interesting, fun, bold, fresh, colorful, original, and modern, while honoring the legacy of NISOD's International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence. The winning artwork must be easily applicable to advertising, brochures, and other applications.
Timeline:

- Winners notified: March 21, 2025
- Winner acceptance due: April 4, 2025
- Prize presented and artwork revealed at NISOD conference: May 25, 2025

DAR offers 26 scholarships for graduating high school seniors, and college and graduate students in specific areas of study.
Scholarship applications are accepted November 1 thru January 31 each year until 11:59 pm (Hawaii Time).
Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
Applicants must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the
United States.

When received, scholarship funds will be credited to your Financial Aid Offer Package. For scholarships of $250.00 or more, the funds will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters, unless otherwise directed by the organization granting the scholarship. Scholarships less than $250.00 are applied toward the Fall semester only (or Spring semester, depending on receipt of check), unless otherwise directed.

Americorps
The program provides full-time educational awards in return for community service
work. You can work before, during, or after your college education, and you can use
the funds to pay current educational costs or repay federal student loans.
Business and Labor Unions
Many companies, businesses and labor organizations have programs to help employees
or members and their families pay the cost of higher education. Ask your organization
if they offer a scholarship program and their application process.
The George Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) of Galveston, Texas, invites Â鶹ɫÇéƬ students to apply for scholarships offered by the DAR Scholarship Committee. Applicants must be citizens of the United States to apply for a scholarship offered by the DAR Scholarship Committee. Applicants must also attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States. DAR chapter sponsorship is not required; however, applicants may want to reach out to the George Washington Chapter for help with their applications. Organizations, Foundations, Etc.
Local foundations, religious organizations, fraternities or sororities, clubs, associations,
civic groups, high schools, private charities, ethnic organizations, credit union
or banks usually offer financial assistance. Include in your search local community
organizations such as: American Legion, YMCA, 4-H Club, Elks, Girls or Boy Scouts,
Kiwanis, or Chamber of Commerce, etc. Searching organizations with your field of interest
can also be helpful, such as American Medical Association, American Bar Association,
etc.
