Medical Administration

The Medical Administration degree program is designed to prepare students to work in health-related fields, from entry level positions (coding and billing assistant, medical administrative assistant, medical records clerk, registration specialist, referral specialist) to higher level positions (office manager, business coordinator, supervisor, executive administrative assistant, coding and billing specialist, pre-certification/referral specialist, and medical records specialist).

Job opportunities for skilled and knowledgeable medical administrators continue to increase as the need for healthcare support increases at hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, insurance and billing companies, medical coding services, urgent care clinics, and federal and state agencies. Skills needed to meet the demands of today‘s healthcare environment  include computer technology, flexibility, multicultural competence, teamwork, customer service, effective communication and presentation skills, interpersonal skills, patient confidentiality and medical coding and insurance.

The Medical Office Administration degree offers students the courses, skills, and knowledge to work in health-related fields, from entry level positions (receptionist, medical front office, coding and billing clerk, medical administrative assistant, transcriptionist, and medical secretary) to high level positions (office manager, medical office coordinator, supervisor, and executive administrative assistant). Job opportunities for skilled, knowledgeable medical office workers continue to increase as the need for medical clerical support increases at hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, insurance and billing companies, medical transcription and coding services, urgent care clinics, and federal and state agencies. Skills needed to meet the demands of today‘s medical office include computer applications, diversity, teamwork, customer service, written communication and presentation skills, interpersonal skills, Internet, patient confidentiality, coding, insurance, and transcription.

  • Adapt to business/medical environment: Demonstrate the ability to identify and adjust to various management styles, cultures, and diversity in a business/medical environment.
  • Health records technology and processes: Demonstrate the comprehension of medical record documentation, medical billing and reimbursement, and concepts related to health insurance and electronic health records.
  • Written documentation: Produce clear, concise, mechanically correct written business/medical documents and presentation media.
  • Using terminology: Understand medical terminology used in allied health and related professions.
