Facing elimination against Region 14 South Conference co-champion San Jacinto College-South on Wednesday in their third game of the NJCAA Division I World Series, 鶹ɫƬ overcame a two-run deficit to defeat the Ravens, 3-2, and advance to the next round of the series.
For the second time in three days, the Whitecaps (45-14) scored three clutch runs in one inning to overcome a World Series opponent and stay alive in the national tournament. Earlier in the day, GC fell to No. 2-seeded Indian River State College, 10-1, at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
With the Ravens' loss to the Whitecaps, SJCS (42-25) is eliminated from the World Series. GC will continue its journey in the national tournament and will face the winner of the Florida Southwestern State and Wallace State matchup, which had not ended at press time.
“I’m proud of our team for putting the earlier game behind us and concentrating on playing San Jac in the elimination round of the tournament,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “It was another tough game, but we got just enough offense to rally for three runs to win the game. Jenna settled down after the first inning and threw six solid, shutout innings to help us advance to the next round of the World Series.”
After giving up two runs in the opening inning against the Ravens, Whitecaps freshman Jenna Johnston went to work and shut down the SJCS offense. Johnston pitched seven complete innings, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out one batter to improve her record to 27-6.
GC answered SJCS's two runs with three scores of their own in the second inning.
Whitecaps center fielder Hannah Griffith singled to left field to score third baseman Breigh Houser to cut the Ravens’ lead to 2-1. Second baseman Samantha Gonzalez followed with a single of her own to left field to drive in right fielder Emily Parks from third base and Griffith scored the game-winning run from second base.
For SJCS, Ravens pitcher Kristina Nash allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings and took the loss to end the season with a 6-7 mark.
