The Permanent Endowment Fund (PEF) of Moody Methodist Church has awarded a very generous grant of $1 million to the 鶹ɫƬ Foundation in support of education and training equipment in the new Health Sciences Education Center at 鶹ɫƬ.

“The PEF grant award is appreciated on many levels,” said 鶹ɫƬ President W. Myles Shelton, Ed.D. “It honors the commitment of the PEF to the Galveston community, and as we near completion of the new Health Sciences Education Center, which will house 鶹ɫƬ’s Allied Health and Nursing programs, this grant will fund a meaningful component of the new building: education and training equipment that students will use every day during classes. Students must have hands-on experience with the equipment they will encounter when they enter the health care workforce. This momentous investment in Galveston Island will help provide the tools for Galveston College to educate and train the community’s workforce of today and tomorrow.”

The growing Health Sciences program at 鶹ɫƬ offers a wide variety of areas of study including Computed Tomography (CT), Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare Management, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Medical Administration, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiation Therapy, Radiography and Surgical Technology.

Matthew Hay, Chair of the PEF Board of Directors, said the purpose of the project fitting neatly with PEF’s mission of advancing the care of people, helped the board of directors decide to make its largest grant award in 10 years to the 鶹ɫƬ Health Sciences Education Center. The gift is made in honor of people who have been instrumental in the formation and growth of the PEF since its founding and incorporation.

Libbie Shearn Moody, wife of W.L. Moody Jr., was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Galveston. Her forward-thinking estate gift, which created a trust upon her death in 1943, led to the establishment of the PEF. Founding board members included Roland Bassett, Ward Benson Jr., John Eckel, M. Joe Helms, Leonard Mosele, Carl Robertson and Rev. Asbury Lenox.

The PEF is a supporting organization of Moody Methodist Church. PEF funding enables the organization’s board of directors, comprised of Moody Methodist Church congregants, to provide grants to non-profit organizations serving people in Galveston and around the world. Through these grants, the PEF works to advance the care of people in the name and spirit of Jesus Christ.
