A symbol of hope and education in the community, the 鶹ɫƬ Beacon Square lighthouse has recently undergone a much-needed facelift. Completed in late September, the restoration project included a fresh coat of paint and minor repairs that have returned the beacon to its iconic status.

The GC Beacon Square lighthouse, a cherished landmark perched on the edge of the college’s main campus on the corner of Ave. Q and 39th Street, has been a guiding light of lifelong learning for both students and the community for the past two decades.

The cupula of the GC beacon was originally part of the South Jetty Lighthouse, which stood on Galveston Island’s east end. The lighthouse was first lit on Nov. 12, 1918, one day after the Armistice of Nov. 11, 1918. A violent storm ravaged and weakened the lighthouse on May 2, 2000, and it fell into the water. In 2003, the U.S. Coast Guard granted a loan of the cupola to the college. A donation by John and Cindy Sullivan restored the cupola, and in Nov. 2006, a public ceremony dedicated the newly built Beacon Square and lighthouse replica, complete with the restored cupola.

The GC beacon symbolizes the college’s commitment to illuminating paths of learning and now shines brighter than ever, embodying the enduring spirit of progress and unity that 鶹ɫƬ has stood for since its founding in 1967.

The renovation was driven by the college’s dedication to preserving the beauty and significance of the structure. The fresh paint, chosen to match the beacon’s original color scheme, breathes new life into the tower, while minor repairs have strengthened the structure’s durability against the elements. Over time, salt air and humidity had taken their toll, leaving the beacon in need of repair, and this restoration ensures its place as a community icon for years to come.

“Seeing the beacon restored to its former glory is a moment of pride for all of us,” said 鶹ɫƬ President, W. Myles Shelton, Ed.D. “The beacon represents the guiding light of education and opportunity that we provide for our students and the community, and it’s heartwarming to see it standing strong and renewed. It’s a reminder of our mission to student success and our commitment to building a better tomorrow for our community.”

The renovation project, while modest in scope, reflects GC’s connection to the community. The college has long been a pillar of educational excellence and workforce development, and the beacon’s restoration stands as a symbol of resilience and growth.

Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to visit and witness the newly restored beacon in person, an inspiring sight against the backdrop of GC’s scenic main campus.
