It took a few innings for 鶹ɫƬ’s bats to get warmed up, but once they did, the Whitecaps didn’t look back as they swept Alvin Community College, 10-4 and 6-1, on Saturday at Carter Field to extend their winning streak to six games.
With the sweep of the Dolphins, the No. 21-ranked Whitecaps remained in first place and improved to 20-8 overall, 9-1 in the Region 14 South Conference. The doubleheader losses dropped ACC to fifth place in conference play with a 4-6 mark and 17-19 overall.
“The team continues to play well and they are getting the job done,” said GC Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We started slow, but we found our groove by the fifth inning. Our players are working hard and focusing in practice and during our games, and it shows.”
GC will look to continue its winning streak on Wednesday when the Whitecaps visit Angelina College for a twin bill at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
In the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, GC’s bats came alive and scored six runs in the fifth inning to overcome a narrow one-run deficit and take a 7-2 lead. ACC scored two in the sixth, but the Whitecaps responded with three more to win the game, 10-4.
GC standout sophomore pitcher Jenna Johnston hurled seven innings, allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out eight Dolphins batters to claim the victory. Johnston improved to 11-3 on the season with the win.
Whitecaps sophomore third baseman Breigh Houser went to 2-for-4, scored one run and drove in two more to help Johnston’s winning cause. Catcher Cady Bowyer, first baseman Riley Riordan and right fielder Halle Cordova each contributed a pair of RBIs.
In the second game, GC’s offense went to work in the first inning, scoring five unanswered runs to take a 5-0 advantage. It turned out to be more than enough as the Whitecaps added an insurance run in the second frame and only allowed the Dolphins a courtesy run in the fifth to seal the victory, 6-1.
GC sophomore hurler Brynn Glidewell (5-2) went the distance and was credited with the victory. Glidewell pitched seven innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out three opponents.
The Whitecaps return home for a doubleheader against San Jacinto College-South on April 2 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
