Solid pitching and a stingy defense lifted 鶹ɫƬ over Angelina College on Wednesday as the Whitecaps shut out the Roadrunners with identical 3-0 scores in a doubleheader at Lufkin to extend their winning streak to eight games.

“Our pitchers and defense did a great job in putting up identical goose eggs and shutting down Angelina College,” said GC Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “We mustered up enough offense to get on the scoreboard and sweep the doubleheader.”

With the twin bill sweep, the Whitecaps improved to 22-8 overall and tightened their grip on first place in the Region 14 South Conference with an 11-1 record.

GC sophomore Jenna Johnston (12-3) hurled a two-hitter in the first game, while striking out six AC batters, to claim her twelfth victory of the season. Offensively, Whitecaps catcher Cady Bowyer went 3-for-3 with one RBI and shortstop Alayna Davis went 1-for-2 with a home run.

In the second game, GC sophomore Brynn Glidewell hurled 6.1 innings, allowing no runs and six hits before Johnston came on in relief to close out the victory. Glidewell was credited with the win and improved to 6-2 on the year, while Johnston was awarded her third save.

Johnston also helped offensively, as she went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

The Whitecaps return home on April 2 for a doubleheader against San Jacinto College-South at 1 and 3:30 p.m., at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
