For the second consecutive year, the 鶹ɫƬ chapter of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa has achieved five-star status.

The Sigma Gamma chapter achieved the honor through various projects, events and outreach, aiming to increase membership and spread the message of community across campus. This includes the completion of the Honors in Action (HIA) project, a PTK undertaking in which members conducted original research about the science of play and authored a research paper about their findings.

This year’s HIA project, with oversight and guidance by 鶹ɫƬ PTK Advisor and Assistant Professor of Government, Regina Durante, Ph.D., and the leadership of PTK President Miranda Donaldson, was about the impact that childhood play can have on a person’s adult personality. The PTK members collaborated with GC’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Research to distribute their survey instrument throughout the community.

The chapter also hosted a Scholarship Night, participated in the regional PTK Business Edge seminar and volunteered within the local community. The biggest volunteer efforts of the chapter were led by the chapter’s Vice President, Jacqueline Mitchell. Mitchell organized volunteers from the chapter to help distribute hygiene kits to the local homeless population.

“It is an honor to work with such talented students, both academically and those who have a heart for servant leadership,” said Durante. “The outreach projects our students led served our homeless community and made an impact on the lives of many.”

The chapter used funds they raised to pay for the hygiene kits and the event was a great opportunity for the 鶹ɫƬ PTK members to get involved locally and volunteer for a good cause.

“It is truly an honor for our chapter to maintain our Five-Star status for the second year in a row,” said Donaldson about the chapter’s continued success. “Our chapter

members, officers and advisors have worked tirelessly to get us to this point. By working as a team and collaborating, we were able to reach our goals. I’m proud of the chapter and the recognition we’ve received.”
